Many thousands of lives are saved annually by personal protective equipment (PPE). Statistics show that those who choose to ignore the requirements for PPE learn the hard way.
PPE is primarily designed to guard you against any risk present in the workplace, be it a construction site or an office. Hence, it is important that one is aware about the different types of PPE.
1.Hearing Protection: This type of protection must be worn by employees who are likely to be exposed to noise at or above the Exposure Action Level. Some examples of this type of PPE are earplugs which are inserted into the ear canal, ear muffs/defenders and semi-inserts which cover the entrance to the ear canal.
2.Head Protection: Some examples of this type of PPE are industrial scalp protectors, which are designed to protect from knocking against stationary objects, caps/hair nets and industrial safety helmets, which are primarily designed to protect against materials falling from a height. This type of protection may be required at construction sites or excavations and tunnels.
3.Eye Protection: Generally, employees who work with hazardous substances or power driven tools are required to wear this type of PPE. Some examples of this type of PPE are eye shields, safety spectacles, safety goggles and face shields.
4.Foot Protection: Foot protection may be required at construction or demolition sites. Some examples of this type of PPE are anti-static and conductive footwear, safety boots or shoes and Wellington boots, which can be supplied with steel toe-caps.
5.Hand and Arm Protection: Hand and arm protection comes in a variety of forms, for instance, wrist cuffs and armlets, gloves and gauntlets and barrier cream may sometimes be used instead of gloves. Hand and arm protection may be required while handling abrasive, sharp or pointed objects or while working with vibrating equipment such as, pneumatic drills.
6.Body Protection: Body protection may include, overalls, aprons, coveralls, life jackets, harnesses and back supports.
7.Respiratory protection: There are primarily 2 types of Respiratory PPE, they are, respirators that supply clean air and respirators that filter contaminated air. This type of PPE is worn when harmful dust, fumes or vapors are present in the workplace.
